University of Toronto High School Design Competition

A one day Engineering design competition at the University of Toronto.  A full day of building, problem-solving and Engineering open to all students from grades 9 – 12.  Final projects are judged at the end of the day.  Ideally you will enter as a team of between 3 – 5 students.   If you don’t have a team the organizers will place you in a team.

Waterloo Unlimited

Waterloo Unlimited is a unique enrichment opportunity for high school students in Grade 10, Grade 11, and Grade 12. Offered during the school year, Unlimited brings together curious, motivated, well-rounded teens from across the country.

Waterloo Unlimited is not quite like anything you've ever done before. It's not science camp or arts camp or music camp or math camp or leadership camp.

It's 'everything' camp.

It's about challenging you to make connections across topics and developing higher-order skills: communication, analysis, synthesis, initiative, curiosity, responsibility, leadership, teamwork and creativity.

It's about open-ended learning rather than memorizing an inventory of "right answers." It's about going home with the skills you need to become self-enriching and even sharing those skills with others.

Grade 11 ‘Camp’ Theme:  ‘Design’

From engineering and the environment to science fiction and virtual reality, students will spend a week exploring the theme of “Design” with a community of like-minded peers.  Through professor-led lectures, small group workshops, and skills sessions, you'll explore the commonalities and differences in design across disciplines leading to the integration of knowledge.

Cost:    $550 (program - includes meals; HST)

Grade 10 Girls Computer Programming

This is an introduction to programming for grade 10 girls that have never programmed before.  By the end of the day, students will have learned the basics of object-oriented programming through a hands-on tutorial and challenge.

Date:              December 9^th, 2016

Time:               8am – 5pm

Location:         University of Waterloo

Registration Deadline:  November 30^th , 2016

Cost:                FREE (we are allowed to send a maximum of 2 teams of 2 students each)

                        Spots will be given to the first 4 students to contact Mrs. Tummon

Shad Valley

Shad Valley is a month long summer program for over 700 students from across Canada and the world.  This opportunity is open to all students in grades 10, 11 and 12.  

Students stay in residence at various universities across Canada.  During the month students participate in a wide variety of STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, art and math) based lectures, workshops, projects and activities that will challenge them to think outside the box and make interdisciplinary connections.  Speakers include university professors, business leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators.  This is a highly competitive program that is an excellent opportunity for any student interested in science and engineering.

*Shad Valley offers a number of university scholarships.  Any student who has attended one of their programs is eligible to apply.

Date:  July 2^nd – 28^th

Location:  Various Universities across Canada

Online Application Deadline:  November 28^th

*Please note:  the application is quite involved and requires, among other things, official documents from the school, a letter of reference, and an essay to be written by the student.  Please ensure you allow yourself and the school enough time to get the required documents together if this program is of interest to you.  Acceptance into the program is highly competitive, so it is important that time is spent on the application.  There is no fee to apply.

Cost:    $4,500

            Bursaries and scholarships are available
